Welcome to Early Years at Sun Academy!
Our Early Years provision, including our Nursery and Reception classes, was judged to be Outstanding by Ofsted at our most recent inspection. We believe that children’s early experiences in education play an important role in helping them to develop as inquisitive, engaged learners as they progress through their school years.
We aim to provide an enriching and supportive environment that helps each and every one of our young learners to develop curiosity, awe, and wonder. Read on to find out more about how our Nursery and Early Years provision works.
Curriculum: What Do Children Learn in Our Nursery and Reception Classes?
We want children in our Nursery and Reception classes to learn by doing and trying new things. Our Early Years Team designs activities to encourage a deep love of learning, a can-do approach to new challenges, and curiousity about the world around them. A broad variety of approaches, involving play and outside learning, help to develop understanding and skills.
We aim to provide children with the skills and knowledge they need in the next steps of their education and life. We have a key focus on early reading and literacy, helping children to develop a lifelong love of reading from a young age and empowering them to read for both knowledge and enjoyment.
Early literacy and phonics skills are taught very well. The children in both Nursery and Reception settings learn to recognise and form letters and to recite stories, nursery rhymes and familiar songs. Children throughout the early years are encouraged to form letter shapes as they sound them out during phonics sessions. This is helping them to improve their hand–eye coordination skills and improves pencil control when writing.

Here are some of the topics we currently cover in our Nursery and Reception curriculum:
Our Community
Parents and carers are an essential part of our approach to learning in our Nursery and Reception stages. At our last inspection, Ofsted took note of the “very positive and warm relationships” that our team develops with the children’s families. We’re keen to get the wider community involved, with regular events for parents, grandparents and wider family members to support the children with learning. This helps the children to feel a part of a wider community, and helps our academy to build connections in our local area.
